Paradigm SHIFT

Meet Team SHIFT – a group of four fifteen-year-olds from Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary) advocating for the Fair Trade cause.

Inspired by our RJC seniors over at the Equator Initiative, who’ve successfully championed efforts to increase the presence of Fair Trade in RGS, we’ve taken this on as the topic of our Community Problem Solving (CmPS) project, which is part of the Macquarie Bank Future Problem-Solving (FPS) competition based in Australia.

We’re targeting our campaign at secondary school youths and want to raise awareness about Fair Trade in our target audience by giving presentations at various secondary schools. We’re also proposing for lesson plans about Fair Trade to be incorporated into the school curriculum as an enrichment module. Through this, we want to interest other students of our age in Fair Trade, and get students to take up self-initiated Service Learning projects on Fair Trade.

Through Footprint Singapore, an "umbrella group" championing Fair Trade efforts in Singapore, Team SHIFT is now working closely with The Lynk Group, Equator Initiative, villagexchange as well as other prominent advocates of Fair Trade to explore ways to involve the youth community in Fair Trade. Right now, we’re working with Equator Initiative to produce a campaign toolkit and to initiate a potential Fair Trade Festival in February.

"We’re exploring many exciting collaborations, both with suppliers and with prominent Fair Trade advocates too. The possibilities are endless," says team member Natalie Tai.
